It’s Getting Worse

What is amazing me about this current administration is  not what they do. Let’s be honest here, there’s not a single administration that should not be ashamed. People in power, particularly in the highest seats of power, rarely get there by being good guys. Never being honest. Never serving the greater good – not in a society such as ours, anyway.

The Supreme Court (Supreme Joke, known as SCOTUS – Supreme Court of the United States) has allowed campaign finance to become the realm of the very rich. Sure, you can contribute. And you’ll get a nice personalized email thanking you for your $20 or whatever. Campaign finance reform might have put a lid on direct contributions, true. Americans are nothing, however, if not ingenious. Show them a barrier, they WILL find a way around it. If it’s something they really want to get around, of course.

So “Citizen’s United” comes along. They are a corporation that, like many corporate entities since the utter destruction of the country embodied in the stupidity of the rulings surrounding the 14th Amendment, sought 1st Amendment rights. That is, the right to Free Speech. What they wanted, quite frankly, was the ability to support measures and positions they felt strongly about.

Never mind that these same measures and positions and opinions and directions were the same as conservative politicians. They weren’t seeking to promote politicians. No sir.

SCOTUS agreed. They allowed corporations and people to support ballot propositions and initiatives, anonymously, meaning they could hide behind groups like Citizen’s United in order to abstract who was really supporting an issue. SCOTUS was smart – or evil – enough to realize that allowing groups to anonymously – and without financial limit or disclosure –  support candidates was a move doomed to failure. So instead, what we have is shadowy groups that can spend a nearly unlimited amount of money on campaigns….from the side.

If candidate A supports cutting funding to programs, the supporters of A can’t give unlimited funds to him. But now, thanks to this ruling, they CAN provide unlimited commercials and flyers and phone campaigns that support A’s positions! A gets swept along by the tide of support for his positions. Brilliant!

I’m sorry America, but you’re stupid. You’re stupid and ill informed. Moreover, you want it that way. As I put it to a friend today, the truth, however bad, can be told straight up to the people now. Along with a host of lies and half-truths – simultaneously. There is no real independent news source anymore. Most, if not all, local – even regional – news “services” are simple aggregators of the big news organizations: CNN, MSNBC, AP.  The rest of the news comes from iReporters – ie – you. You send in the cellphone video of the house fire, the wreck on the highway, the standoff in the neighborhood. Freedom of the Press means little when there is no real press.

Citizen’s United is but one of the examples of how the country has become so corrupt, it defies calling it corrupt. “Find out just what the people will submit to and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.
— Frederick Douglass, civil rights activist, Aug. 4, 1857”

Douglass was entirely correct. The NSA, caught and revealed by Snowden, says, no, we didn’t listen in to the phone call, we only collected where it originated and where it went. We didn’t collect the contents of the email, only who sent it to whom. We didn’t look at the photo, we only collected metadata. Until that data, those items they did collect, show a pattern. Like most things American – content is NOT king. Rather, it’s appearances. Your phone calls appear to show a pattern since you call the Mideast a lot. Your emails lead us to believe you are supporting an unAmerican group. Your photo exif data, along with the GPS embedded locations, seem to be suspicious.

Where’s the outcry? Where’s the recalls of officials?? Where’s the defiance of Americans? Well, the NBA finals are on and it’s pretty warm out and I don’t have any vacation time and ….I’m afraid.

I’m afraid, too. I’m afraid of the government I helped elect. They are supposed to represent me. But I don’t recognize them.

It’s getting worse.
